polvo’s
i live in hyde park but the greatest concentration of queso lies in south austin. i went to polvo’s recently (on south first near live oak) for the first time after years of hearing delicious things but being to lazy to ever drive 5 miles down the road. but GAS IS CHEAP. and I’M DOWN THERE MOST OF THE TIME ANYWAY. WHY! NOT!
but let’s keep in mind that we came to polvo’s on a sunday night after a massively toilsome 18 hole trek at peter pan’s mini golf, full of booze and mosquitos! we needed nourishment! insert: queso
we ordered a large chile con queso, a plate bedecked with multiple queso embellishments to throw in to your liking: onions, diced peppers, diced tomatoes, guacamole, and meat. but! don’t let these options fool you!
- consistency = would likely fall between thin and slightly thick
- flavor = the cheese didn’t give my mouth a kick, but blending it with the meat proved to be almost overpowering since it was so heavily seasoned
- spiciness = not much, and the guac toned it down even more
- price = $5.50/ $6.50, you’re getting more for your money with the large!
- overall rating on a 10 scale = 5.5, if it were in front of me, i’d eat it. that’s about it.

although the queso left me fairly disheartened, my yen for food itself was ultimately fulfilled! their chicken enchilade plate topped with tomatillo sauce was absolutely delectable - highly recommended. their margarita menu also has a plethora of flavors to choose from. my frozen raspberry had definite flavor, maybe a bit too sugary for me, but still strong.
